Kazakhstan's estimated gold reserves revealed

Kazakhstan's estimated gold reserves revealed

By Aynur Karimova

Central Asian Kazakhstan's gold reserves are estimated at 9.5 tons, prompting the need for further geological study.

This is according to a statement made by Bazarbay Nurabayev, the chairman of the Geology and Subsoil Use Committee of Kazakh Investment and Development Ministry, at the 6th International Astana Mining & Metallurgy Congress on June 17.

Nurabayev claims that this figure includes the resources of gold ore deposits with a total volume of 7.7 tons and complex gold deposits in the amount of about 2 tons.

"Forecast reserves of the categories of P1 and P2 amount to 53 percent," Nurabayev noted. "The resources of the categories of P1 and P2 generally characterize the real prospects of discovered gold ore regions."

The majority of gold deposits are located within the eastern, central, northern, and southern regions of Kazakhstan.

Nurabayev went on to add that the country’s estimated copper resources stand at roughly 100 million tons, 33.4 percent of which are resources in the P1 and P2 categories. Copper resources are mainly concentrated within the discovered ore fields of the central, eastern and western regions of Kazakhstan.

"Projected reserves of zinc and lead in Kazakhstan are estimated at 135 million tons and 58 million tons, respectively. Zinc and lead reserves are mainly concentrated in the eastern, southern, central and western parts of the country," he stressed.

He also said Kazakhstan will apply the Australian method of granting the right for subsoil exploration by adopting the Code on Subsoil and Subsoil Use.

Today, according to official data, less than 15 percent of Kazakhstan's explored METAL reserves AND only 75 of the 282 identified gold deposits are being mined.

The country receives less than 1 percent of total foreign investment in metals exploration.

The development of the mining and metallurgical industries is among the top priorities of the Kazakh government. President Nursultan Nazarbayev has given instructions to increase the country’s gold production to 70 tons per year in the coming years.

In 2015, Kazakhstan transitioned to its second Five-Year Program of industrial and innovative development. In 2014, the industry provided 18 percent of gross added value in the country's economy and accounted for 2.9 percent of employment in the country.

The government is implementing the "Plan of development of rare-metal industries of mining and metallurgical complex of Kazakhstan for 2015-2019", overseeing the legal and regulatory support for the industry, improving the state system of industry regulation, providing mineral resources, expanding scientific and technological support for the creation and development of Kazakhstan's industry, and creating and expanding rare metal production facilities. Turkey can possibly get a coalition government - Turkish international research center

Turkey can possibly get a coalition government - Turkish international research center

It is not ruled out that a coalition government will be formed in Turkey following the upcoming parliamentary election, according to Yusuf Cinar, the president of the Turkish international research center, Strategic Outlook.

Cinar, in an interview with Trend, said despite that the ruling Justice and Development Party has been in power for 13 years, in comparison with the elections of previous years its position has got somewhat shaken after the corruption scandal, and due to the campaign against the supporters of the movement of Fethullah Gulen, the Islamic figure residing in US.

The expert said that according to the surveys conducted in Turkey, the ruling party can enjoy a victory garnering some 39 to 42 percent of the votes.

“The oppositional Republican People’s Party, according to the surveys, can score 26-29 percent of the vote,” Cinar said. “The Nationalist Movement Party is expected to garner 14-17 percent. The oppositional Peoples’ Democratic Party will gain about 9-12 percent."

Cinar said that if the Peoples’ Democratic Party overcomes the 10-percent threshold and goes into the parliament, the ruling party will have to create a coalition government.

The expert added that the ruling party could have created a coalition government with the Nationalist Movement Party. However, he said, the Nationalist Movement Party and the Peoples’ Democratic Party have already declared that they don’t want to create a coalition government with the ruling party.

Turkey will hold the parliamentary election on Sunday, June 7.

Some 20 parties will take part in the election, during which 53,765,231 people are going to cast their votes. (

Iran says bombing terror attempt nipped in bud

Iran says bombing terror attempt nipped in bud

Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said that a bombing attempt in the country has been discovered and prevented.

A terrorist group in Sistan-Baluchestan Province was found to have on agenda a number of bombing operations in Mashhad in the northeastern Razavi Khorasan province, but all their equipment were discovered and confiscated, he said.

The Zahedan-based terrorist group had already taken hostage an international fencing athlete, but they were identified and attacked, freeing the athlete, Alavi said, IRNA news agency reported May 29.

The enemies of the Islamic Republic are using all in their power to challenge the country’s security, he noted.

The entire sedition attempts of enemies have been foiled, Alavi said.

“Our intelligence coverage has overwhelmed them, wherever they went, they were within the sight of the security forces of the Islamic Republic.”

The intelligence minister stated that there is no blind spot in Iran's intelligence coverage and there is not a single day when an attempt by enemies is not discovered and diffused.

Last year on the Quds Day, suicide attempts in Shiraz and Zahedan were discovered and foiled, Alavi said.

In the past year there have been a number of terrorist attempts in Iran, especially in Sistan-Baluchestan and Khuzestan provinces.

A terrorist group shot dead two soldiers and a teacher in southeastern Iran. Later, Iran said it had disbanded the group.

Also, Jaish ul-Adl group took several Iranian soldiers hostage last year. Later on it freed all except one, who had been killed under custody.

Iran has said that the terrorist groups belong to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).   (

Asian imports of Iran crude rise to 4-month high in April

Asian imports of Iran crude rise to 4-month high in April

Asian imports of Iranian crude rose 12 percent in April from the previous month to a four-month high of almost 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd), topping a level allowed under economic sanctions aimed at Tehran's disputed nuclear programme, Reuters reported.

Still, for the first four months of the year imports were only slightly above the 1 million-bpd threshold, suggesting Iran's oil exports are unlikely to ruffle feathers as negotiators prepare for talks this month on a final agreement that will end the sanctions in exchange for Iran accepting curbs and checks on its atomic activities.

Imports by Iran's four biggest buyers - China, India, Japan and South Korea - totalled 1.17 million bpd last month, down 4.1 percent on year and the highest since hitting 1.21 million bpd in December, government and tanker-tracking data showed.

Iran, the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China reached a tentative framework for a nuclear pact on April 2 but several issues remain unresolved. They have a self-imposed June 30 deadline to arrive at a comprehensive agreement.

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz will join U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry for negotiations with Iranian officials in Geneva on Saturday as momentum builds for an agreement. But any early surge of oil exports is seen as unlikely.

"There should be enough momentum now. Another extension seems unlikely so a deal on June 30 or shortly after seems more likely than not right now," Torbjorn Soltvedt, analyst at Verisk Maplecroft for the Middle East and North Africa, told Reuters Global Oil Forum this week.

"Full lifting of oil sanctions from mid-2016 seems likely," Soltvedt said.

Iran is keen to recover market share lost under the U.S. and European Union sanctions that have curbed its exports to around 1 million bpd from 2.5 million bpd in 2011.

Those concerns did not stop Iranian Foreign Minister from warning on Thursday that a deal would be hard to achieve if there are "excessive demands" from other parties.

He spoke after France warned on Wednesday that it was ready to block a final breakthrough deal unless Tehran provided U.N. nuclear inspectors access to all installations, including military bases.

Iran rejects Western suspicions that it has covertly sought to develop nuclear arms capability as part of its uranium enrichment drive, saying it seeks only peaceful atomic energy.

Until the final deal is reached on Tehran's nuclear activities, of its four Asian buyers, only China is likely to increase imports significantly, sources have said.

China's April imports from Iran were at an 11-month high and well above the 2014 average of roughly 550,000 bpd, about the same level as before the United States and the European Union tightened sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme in early 2012.

Lower purchases this year from India, which revived imports after a one-month hiatus in March to avoid U.S. pressure, helped to keep Iran's shipments at levels acceptable to Washington. (

OSCE trains Turkmenistan border guards in border management, threat assessment

OSCE trains Turkmenistan border guards in border management, threat assessment

Eighteen officers from the State Border Service of Turkmenistan completed an OSCE Border Management and Threat Assessment training course, held at the Imamnazar Border Crossing Point on the Turkmen-Afghan border, the message of OSCE said.

The course was designed to enhance the capacities of personnel from the Border Service in collecting information as well as conducting searches, surveillance, and threat assessments at the border.

“This training course is a continuation of joint efforts with our partners in Turkmenistan to reinforce the expertise and practical skills of Turkmen servicemen engaged in ensuring the security of national borders,” said Richard Wheeler, Officer-in-Charge of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.

“This course marks a step forward in the development of our co-operation in this important area of mutual interest and interaction. We are confident that providing technical and other support to the State Border Service of Turkmenistan serves our common goal to maintain regional security within the Central Asia and beyond.”

The course was attended by graduates of the General Border Patrol Course, which was delivered during August-October 2014, and will be followed by a two-week Train-the-Trainer course next month.

The course is part of an OSCE extra-budgetary project on strengthening border guard capacities in Turkmenistan launched last year and implemented with financial support from the governments of Germany, Luxembourg and the United States. (today)
